Xbox Game Pass Ultimate
What works
- Every Xbox first-party game launches in the catalog on day one — Halo, Forza, Starfield, Call of Duty, Diablo, and Fallout all available at launch without extra purchase
- xCloud lets you stream 450+ games on iPhone, Android, and any browser — play Xbox games on a phone or Chromebook without hardware
- EA Play inclusion adds FIFA, Madden, Battlefield, Mass Effect, and Dragon Age catalog without a separate subscription
What doesn't
- Microsoft has been removing first-party games from the catalog after launch — Starfield left Game Pass two years after release, breaking the permanent-access promise
- $19.99/month is higher than PS Plus Extra's $17.99 — $24/year more expensive
- Xbox's exclusive game library has narrowed as Microsoft makes games multiplatform — the day-one exclusivity advantage is eroding
PlayStation Plus Extra
What works
- PlayStation first-party catalog includes Spider-Man, God of War, Horizon, Ratchet & Clank, The Last of Us — franchise depth that Xbox can't match on exclusive storytelling
- At $17.99/month Extra, it's $2/month cheaper than Game Pass Ultimate for comparable game volume
- Online multiplayer and PS+ Monthly Games included in the base $9.99 Essential tier — more accessible entry for casual players
What doesn't
- PlayStation first-party games don't appear in the catalog on day one — God of War Ragnarok took 18 months to enter PS+ Extra after release
- No cloud streaming at Extra tier — cloud gaming requires the $19.99 Premium upgrade, erasing the price advantage over Game Pass
- No PC gaming component — PlayStation Plus is console-only; Game Pass works on Windows PC natively
Bottom line
Our pick: PlayStation Plus Extra.
