MERV 13 outperforms MERV 11 by capturing 90%+ of 1-3μm particles compared to 65-79% (ASHRAE 52.2), making it preferable for allergy and smoke control. It does increase pressure drop by 0.1-0.2 in. w.g., which can raise energy use on older systems. MERV 11 remains adequate and more efficient for basic dust and pollen filtration in well-sealed homes with no respiratory issues.
